FPS -> first person shooters

hi,
to be honest the first person shooters genre is the type of games that I dislike the most.but recently I'm trying to get ''tame'' with the genre and discover it a bit more thinking I might miss something afterall.
As I'm a big retro-gamer I started with the begining and attacked the pioneers of the serie.

then,so far I've beaten:
-wolfenstein 3D (very redundant and confusing at the last levels)
-Doom 1&2 (I prefer the first one because I prefer the size of the maps as well as their layout and design.I don't like the use of heights in the second,and I find the maps confusing.And seriously there is no big improvements from doom 1 to doom 2!I feel like it's pretty much the same game but with different maps....thus,it could have been just an expansion instead of a ''suite'')
-Duke Nukem 3D (I liked this one!vulgar,offensive,you wander in a ''real world'' and it's a good challenge)
-Blake Stone (well,it's currently what I'm playing...)

Then,after,I'm planning to give a try at:
-heretic
-hexen
-rise of the triad
-quake
-shadow warrior
-star wars : dark forces
-turok 1&2 [N64] (I had those games for a while now in my collection and never player it yet...)
-goldeneye 007 [N64] (same as above.already tried it;didn't really enjoy it.)
-Resident Evil : survivor [ps one] (I really liked RE1&2 so I might try this one for sure)
-Arx Fatalis (I actually tried this one.I got this on xbox because I like RPGs so I thought mixing both genres could result in a good game.But to be honest right now I just don't like the plot and the inventory system.I find it pretty boring)
-Doom 3 (can't miss this seriously)

If you played some of those games at the time I'd like to know your experience with them.What was the very first FPS you've ever played in your gamer's life?I'd like it if you could review some of the games I didn't try yet.do you have some gems you affection particulary in the genre that you can suggest me?and I'd like to know what is it you like so much about FPS?
I have nothing against progress in gaming history and 3D polygon graphics,but I hate it when I don't see my character!and maybe I'm just stupid but I get lost so easily in a 3D environement.It's like I just lose north and south.hehe.
on game consoles,I deeply hate playing with both analog sticks!it's just doesn't feel natural for me,especially when they go in opposite directions,and I have a hard time with the precision of the right analog stick.
and I just can't stand the call of duty and medal of honor series.I don't like war games!and to think that modern warfare 2 is getting one of the top selling game of all times!it just proves me how I don't follow the trend with next gen gaming.
And what decieves me the most is the fucking Metroid Prime series.They sucks really bad!I was a die-hard metroid fan but they lost me for good by going into the first person game style.

During the time I was gone, I've given Heretic, Hexen, and Strife a try. Heretic is sorta like a medieval version of Doom, and Hexen is good with its three separate warrior classes and weapons. Strife is like Doom, only it has some RPG elements, and you can revisit almost every place. I never finished any of these though.

Quake 3 arena on the Dreamcast was good times with my roommates.

Duck Hunt for NES. Good for drinkin games.

Also Freedom Force.

The Dooms were confusing in areas.

Duke Nukem, uh, the time travelling one. Thatt was awesome on the N64.

Goldeneye was my first modern FPS. Many good times back in the day...

I liked in the time back first person shooters. I played at this time:

Wolfenstein 3D
Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Heretic
Hexen 1 & 2
Shadow Warrior
Quake 1 - 3
Turok 1,2, Rage Wars
etc. etc.

You have already mentioned all the good games.

If you wanna play some "newer" game and you don't dislike zombies (as far i see) try Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green or Left 4 Dead 1 + 2.

Well, For Me I Don't Prefer RE and Doom, Maybe Half-Life And Battlefield, And COD and Such.
Sorry I Couldn't Help, Anyway I Don't Prefer FPS Games, I Like Adventure Or RPG.

Turok was pretty boring for it's hype. Never played the others, except TUROK on my PS3, when I had it. That one was pretty nice.

I miss multiplayer vs ba ck in the day. They were always better against your friends.
